The main physiological function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis is to control female development, normal menstruation and sexual function. This regulation of sexual function is completed through neural regulation and hormonal feedback regulation. Clinically, sex hormone levels are commonly measured to understand female endocrine function and diagnose diseases related to endocrine disorders. Therefore, sex hormone test results are very important for clinical decision-making and are widely used in the fields of obstetrics and gynecology, endocrinology and assisted reproduction. Sex hormone testing items are currently being carried out clinically, mainly including follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol (E2), testosterone (Tes), progesterone (Prog), prolactin (PRL), luteinizing hormone (LH), β-chorionic gonadotropin (β-HCG), etc.

Recommended test population

1. Menstrual cycle disorders, amenorrhea, abnormal uterine bleeding.

2. Before and after menopause (flushes, night sweats, sleep disorders, emotional abnormalities, senile vaginitis, osteoporosis, etc.

3. Assisted pregnancy-assessing ovarian reserve function.

4. Determine ovulation.

5. Suspected abnormalities of sexual development, assist in diagnosing diseases such as adrenocortical growth.

6. Gynecological-related tumors, especially tumors with suspected endocrine function.

"Chinese Expert Consensus on Diagnosis and Treatment of Unexplained Infertility" in 2019

Recommendations 4 for methods to assess ovulation and ovarian reserve function:

(1) B-ultrasound to monitor follicle development (evidence level 1A); (2) Mid-luteal peripheral blood progesterone measurement (≥3ng/ml) (evidence level 1B); (3) Urinary LH monitoring (evidence level 2C); women with regular menstruation are more likely to ovulate (evidence level 2B); (4) Recommended for women ≥35 years of age, ovarian reserve function can be evaluated as early as possible: including age, basic sex hormones, etc.

02

"Expert Consensus on Classification and Diagnosis Process of Abnormal Sexual Development" In 2022

Patients with abnormal sexual development usually need to detect six reproductive hormones, including luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin (PRL), and estradiol (E2), progesterone (Prog), testosterone (Tes).

03

"Expert Consensus on the Diagnosis and Treatment Process of Menopause after Termination of Early Pregnancy" in 2020

Relevant auxiliary examinations are combined with medical history and physical examination. After a preliminary understanding of the cause of menopause after termination of pregnancy, selected auxiliary examinations can help to make a clear diagnosis.  Pregnancy test: Blood β-HCG test can help determine whether post-abortion menopause is related to pregnancy-related factors such as another pregnancy, residual pregnancy products, trophoblastic disease, etc.  Determination of hormone levels: Determination of estradiol (E2), progesterone (Prog), FSH, LH, prolactin (PRL) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).
