Introduction to Immunoglobulin E

Immunoglobulin (Ig) is a globulin with antibody activity or a chemical structure similar to that of an antibody. It can be divided into 5 types according to its heavy chain structure and antigenicity. IgE antibody is one of them, with the lowest content in normal human serum. IgE is mainly produced by B cells in the submucosal lamina propria lymphoid tissue of the nasopharynx, tonsils, trachea, and gastrointestinal tract. It can bind to surface receptors on mast cells and basophils, putting the body in a sensitized state.

Clinical significance of immunoglobulin E

Elevated IgE

Ø Type I allergic diseases, such as idiopathic asthma, idiopathic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, etc., IgE is often elevated.

Ø Non-allergic diseases, such as IgE myeloma, parasitic infection, etc. IgE is elevated.

Ø IgE can be elevated in diseases such as acute or chronic hepatitis, SLE, and rheumatoid arthritis.
