Intrinsic factor is a glycoprotein secreted by gastric parietal cells. IF combines with vitamin B12 to form a complex, which has strong resistance to proteolytic enzymes, prevents vitamin B12 from being decomposed and destroyed, and promotes the absorption of vitamin B12 by the ileal epithelium.
The above process is the only way for the human body to absorb vitamin B12. Once the secretion of intrinsic factor is deficient or the body produces antibodies against intrinsic factor, it will greatly affect the absorption of vitamin B12, and then affect the production of red blood cells, resulting in pernicious anemia and higher stomach cancer risk.
According to the combination principle of IF and vitamin B12, IF is mainly used in the determination of serum vitamin B12.
